Low-rent housing occupancy standards

The following are a few frequently asked questions and answers about low-rent housing occupancy standards:

How many people can live in a low-rent housing apartment?

The number of people in the household (individuals, a couple or a family) determines the type of apartment and number of rooms that can be provided:

  • A studio apartment for a person living alone;
  • A one-bedroom apartment for a person living alone or a couple;
  • One additional bedroom for each additional person

However, only one bedroom is provided for:

  • 2 children under the age of 7
  • 2 children under the age of 14 of the same sex, as long as their age difference is no more than 6 years.
Is it possible to get an additional room for a member of the household with a disability?

An additional bedroom can be provided to a person with a disability whose deficiency or method of alleviating a disability prevents the bedroom from being shared.

Can we have a separate bedroom for a child in shared custody?

Yes, an additional bedroom can be provided for a child whose custody is shared but only if the child lives in the household in question at least 40% of the time.

Why is it that only people named on the lease can live in the apartment?

The size of your apartment is based on the number of people you listed on the lease. Also, your rent is calculated according to the income of everyone who lives with you. Therefore, only the people named on the lease may live in the apartment.
